Reset and Finish Strong!

Spring break offered us a reset, and 3rd quarter ends on April 4, putting us three-quarters of the way through this school year. That leaves a full quarter remaining–plenty of time to further reinforce good habits and choices, and to also look at where habits and choices are hurting more than helping. A good message to all students is “reset and finish strong!”

Parents, here are questions to spark discussion at home. They are written from the student perspective to help your child reflect on their own experiences so far this year. The questions can be applied to many areas of life, not just school.

-Do my backpack, locker, and workspace at home need a cleaning and reorganization?
-Am I using my WIN times effectively, and balancing academic support with social outlets?
-Am I making excuses that are starting to pile up? Am I procrastinating or avoiding work I don’t want to do?
-What subject area/assignment or test type/general study skills are working well for me and why? Which ones need improvement and what can I do about that this 4th quarter?
(YOU are the key person. Adults are here, and at home, to encourage and support, not to do it for you.)
-How am I positively contributing to the H-M Middle School environment each day? (If you struggle to come up with an answer, make some changes. It can be as simple as walking into class with a smile and greeting your teacher and classmates, or helping keep things clean in the cafeteria, or showing good manners when moving through the halls.)

An overlying question for parents is this: Is my child learning to balance academic responsibility, respectful behavior choices, and healthy social connections? If you have concerns or questions you would like to discuss further, contact MS Counselor Lisa Valentine.

Summer Service Trip to Nazareth Farm: July 13-19

This week-long service-retreat offers rising juniors and seniors a unique opportunity to serve in rural Appalachia, partnering with Nazareth Farm, a Catholic nonprofit dedicated to addressing substandard housing.

Students will engage in meaningful service, prayer, and reflection while embracing the simplicity and beauty of West Virginia. This trip will fulfill two service experiences, including the “poor and vulnerable” category.

The trip will be led by Ben Breschi, a Hill-Murray Theology teacher and Notre Dame graduate, who previously worked at Nazareth Farm and will serve as the lead chaperone.

More information, including how to apply, is on the Service Google Classroom. Please reach out to Ben Breschi (bbreschi@hill-murray.org) with questions.
