Our Pioneer alumni a

Our Pioneer alumni are off doing great things! Matthew Haas '05 is a true trailblazer. We're cheering you on with Pioneer Pride!Matthew Haas was born with a tumor in his left foot, caused by Neurofibromatosis, and eventually that foot was amputated when he was 32.

Three years later, Haas was introduced by his prosthetist to adaptive athletics and competed in the 100-meters at the Endeavor Games – he finished in last place, and his prosthetic leg fell off during the race, but he was hooked.

"Running has definitely brought a ton of discipline and joy to my life. Since being given this gift, I've made other lifestyle changes as well -- eating better, drinking less, sleeping more. So really I'm only able to run BECAUSE of the amputation, not DESPITE it."

Haas believes running will help him to a longer, healthier life. He's now running distances he never thought possible, including the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon for the past two years, and this year he’s tackling the full 26.2-mile race in Grandma’s Marathon.

We'll see you at the finish line, Matthew 👏
