Beyond Hospice is a hospice center that is looking for volunteers and is located right in Oakdale! You can do many things as a volunteer here such as preparing meals, helping out the caregiver with simple tasks, and much more! If you would like more information on this organization, check your Google Service Classroom. Remember that all Service should be tracked and turned in before May 1st. You can always ask Ms. Fandrich if you have any questions!

Tonight from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM, in the Hill-Murray Teachers Lounge, there will be an informational meeting to learn about the Hill-Murray Fishing Team.

The Fishing Team provides a fun way to learn more about fishing and will help you catch more fish. There are opportunities to ice fish with the team during the winter months, and many chances to fish in the spring and summer. You do not need a boat to join the Fishing Team.

For students involved in other sports, the Fishing Team season generally does not interfere with other athletic commitments, as it typically starts in late spring and ends before the start of fall sports. The only potential overlap may be with summer baseball.

The Fishing Team is open to students in grades 8–12. Please plan on attending the informational meeting to learn more. Parents and current fishing team members are encouraged to attend as well. Enter the school through the main front doors.

 Once again, the meeting is Monday, April 7th, from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM in the Teachers Lounge.

Hi everyone!  Ms. Fandrich and Mr. Misenor here!

We have some exciting news, we are planning an amazing HM student trip to ITALY, not this summer…but NEXT Summer!  This trip is open to current 9th, 10th, and 11th-grade students. 

It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience Italian history, art, and theology! This trip starts in Venice, then off to Florence, and we’ll end in Rome! We will able to see things like the famous Canals and Bridges of Venice, The Duomo and the David in Florence, and the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and the Vatican with the beautiful Sistine Chapel.

We will enjoy Italian food such as authentic pizza and gelato! See a glass blowing demonstration, and explore these great cities!

Today is the last day of AI week and the last day for Professor Nimble and Midas. Yesterday Professor Nimble was very tough. Of the more than 50 games it played, it lost only 9 times. Today will be even tougher–it’s almost unbeatable! Professor Nimble has a secret though. Just by asking the right question, you can greatly improve your chances of winning. Today we are giving away the grand prize–$15 starbucks gift cards!  Anybody who beats Professor Nimble today will have their name entered in a drawing to WIN the prize. Today is a very special day—We invite you to join us for a special Reconciliation Prayer Service in the Fieldhouse today during your 7th hour Class. This is a wonderful opportunity for reflection, healing, and spiritual growth during the season of LENT.

During the prayer service, we will have the Sacrament of Confession available for those who wish to participate. Whether you’re seeking forgiveness or simply wish to deepen your faith through praying with the priest, this is a great opportunity.

You will be sitting with your 7th Hour Class! 

6-9th graders, head down to the fieldhouse after 5th Hour. Please leave your backpacks in your 5th Hour class. 10th -12th Graders will go to the second prayer service, so please leave your backpacks in your 7th hour. 

In addition, Fr. John will be offering MASS for High School students during their WIN in the chapel. Please sign up under Fr. John. 

Also, a reminder that it is no meat Friday, this means that the burger station has BLACK BEAN burgers, not hamburgers or cheeseburgers. Choose your lunch well! You don’t get to return it and choose something else because you didn’t read the sign that says BLACK BEAN burgers.

MAY BE A STUDENT?

Yesterday was a good day for Professor Nimble! It won 60% of the games it played, and it is getting very hard to beat. If can manage to beat professor nimble today, you can win a full sized candy bar! Midas is not learning quite as quickly – it’s game is a lot more complicated – but the more we challenge it, the more it has a chance to learn. Look for both AI machines in the cafeteria today. 

Artificial intelligence can do a lot more than help you with your homework. Did you know that AI is being used to discover new medicines and help diagnose diseases? The agricultural industry is also using AI to monitor crops, anticipate yield, and predict which pests might be a problem. The applications of AI are nearly endless. Stop by the tables in the cafeteria during lunch to learn more.

Starting next week, we will begin construction on the Hill-Murray Student Union. While we are excited about this addition, we will need to be ready for some small inconveniences during construction.  

One of the largest inconveniences will be the closing off of the commons entrance and TNC entrance. To get into the building, students will need to enter through the Field House, the Commons north doors, or the main entrance. 

In addition, students will need to be extra aware if they arrive to school after 8:00 as deliveries will be arriving at the construction site, and at times, the main entrance sidewalk will be closed off. 

To sum it up, give yourself a little extra time to get to school and be safe around the construction zone!

Congratulations to the HOSA members who traveled to St. Cloud over the past three days to compete at the State Leadership Conference. Our team, along with other chapters in our region, was named “Region of the Year” and awarded the trophy for most participation at HOSA events this year.

Good morning Pioneers! This is Lexi W here with your Wellness Wednesday. This week, I want to talk about how important learning new skills can be for your mental health. Ranging from a new sport like pickleball to a new card trick, or even as extreme as a new language, learning new things is helpful when improving your mental health. Today is day 3 of AI week. Yesterday, Professor Nimble played 42 games and won 14. That’s ⅓ of the games! Midas played 67 games and won 17 which is also about a third of games. If you can beat one of the bots today, the prizes are even better, but watch out because the bots are getting smarter!

Both Midas and Professor Nimble are simple examples of a “Supervised Machine Learning Algorithm.” When we say it’s supervised that means that it gets feedback on whether it is right or wrong. After each game we let the bots know whether they have won or lost. This feedback helps the algorithm learn the best strategies for the game. Other examples of Supervised Machine Learning are email spam filters and voice and face recognition. Things like ChatGPT, on the other hand, are examples of “Unsupervised” learning. These algorithms learn patterns within the data without getting feedback. If you want to learn more talk to the Machine Learning Club!

Happy April Fool’s Day, or poisson d’avril as they say in French. French Club has organized a school-wide game for today based on a French tradition. In France students try to sneakily tape a paper fish onto the backs of their classmates to call them an April Fool.

In French club today we will prepare the paper fish, and then be on the lookout, you might get a fish taped to your back! If you do, come see Dr. Obernolte or Monsieur Kolb in 118 or 136 to win some Swedish Fish as a prize.

Here’s an update on the AI machines. Yesterday, Professor Nimble played 40 games and won 9. That’s a winning percentage of 23%. Midas, our new AI bot played 46 games and won 6. That may not be very many wins, but Professor Nimble and Midas both get better with each game! Be sure to visit both machines during lunch. You can play as many times as you want. And every time you beat them you get a prize.

Artificial Intelligence may seem brand new, but research on AI started all the way back in the first half of the 20th century. In 1940, Edward Condon created Nimatron, a computer that played the game Nim, just like Professor Nimble. One of the first running AI software programs was called Logic Theorist, created by Allen Newell, J.C. Shaw, and Hertbert Simon in 1955 at the Carnegie Institute of Technology. This program could prove theorems in mathematical logic. 

Research and development has continued since then and is growing rapidly. In 1997, IBM supercomputer Deep Blue was the first computer to beat a world champion chess player, Garry Kasparov, in what many see as a major milestone in the development of AI. Stop by the tables in the cafeteria to challenge Professor Nimble and Midas and to learn more about AI and the Machine Learning Club.
